“If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.” – Henry David Thoreau
This is beautiful. Thank you for posting this. I love reading Thoreau’s work and you posting this, along with the comments, reminded me of the fact. Of course, only good teachers find the right things to inspire others with. I am happy to follow your blog today =)
Sir Thoreau couldn’t have asserted a better passage describing the steps to and benefits of living out one’s dreams. Today, I’m experiencing that moment in my life. Thank you for posting this quote, one that I will consider as an affirmation. 😊
Yahobahne, Thank you for your comments. When I first saw this quote, it was an affirmation to me that I was moving in the right direction in my life. I’m glad it speaks to you, too. Many blessings to you.
That might have been true in Thoreau’s world many decades ago. I don’t think it’s true now because one has to pay the bills. Thus, there has to be a pretty good source of income that allows one to pay the bills while still striving for those dreams.
Oh, I agree that one has to pay the bills, but one’s dreams and the imagined life don’t have to involve material things. For me, it is more a matter of refocusing priorities to create a less stressful life with more time for the things I enjoy doing and more time with family and friends rather than a life full of “ought-tos” (apart from the ought-to of work which, of course, is always there).
And OH how I needed these words today. I just did something today with a prayer and wish that my photography shoots forward. Thank you SO much for these encouraging words!! Bless you! xx Amy
I am so glad that these words helped you today. When I first began this blog, I had made a major life decision and was not at all sure (after I made it) that it was the right one. These words were a comfort to me then and gave me something to hold onto.
Thank you so much! It was that quotation that gave me the courage to quit my full time job at an exclusive prep school and begin teaching part time in a school for at-risk high school students.
Same here. Also feeling lethargic and wanting to hibernate but pushing on and going to work. The weather here is a contributing factor, I’m sure. Take care!
I’m sorry to that you’re struggling too. I’ll keep you in my prayers. I haven’t yet found anything that helps my fatigue either. Wishing you better soon. Hugs and love x
That quote inspired me to leave a job teaching at an exclusive private school (where I was unhappy) and begin teaching at a night school for young people who work full time or are otherwise at risk of not finishing high school. I make less money, know that I am making a difference, and am much happier!
I love this quote. It inspired me to quit my full time teaching job in an elite high school and to take a job teaching at-risk students in an evening high school.
Thank you! It’s obviously one of my favorite quotes. Several years ago it inspired me to quit my full time teaching job in an elite private school and take a job teaching at-risk students here in Appalachia.
Some quotes really touch one with a true window to the reality of how time in flux intertwines with universal energy and personal intention. Thank-you for presenting these simple words of enlightenment. ❤
Nice story. Sounds quiet and peaceful.
