Born in 1899 in Australia, Helen Lyndon Goff began publishing her poems while still a teenager. In 1924, she moved to England and began writing under the pen name P.L. Travers. She is best known for her Mary Poppins series of books. In 1964, Walt Disney productions released a musical film adaptation of Mary Poppins which met with Travers’ disapproval. She disliked the portrayal of the character of Mary Poppins, as well as the music and animation in the film. The British stage musical opened in 2004, with Travers’ approval as long as no one from the film production was involved.

Travers was made an Officer in the Order of the British Empire in 1977. She died in London at the age of 96 in 1996.
