Cee’s Odd Ball Photo Challenge: What I found on my walk down the road

45 in the grass

Where in the world this came from I have no idea.  It’s a 45 rpm recording of Ernestine Anderson singing Thank You, Mr. Moon and is marked “Promotion Copy – Not For Sale”.  While walking down the road a few days ago I spotted it in the weeds along the roadside.  There are only three houses on our road, and knowing our neighbors’ tastes in music, I doubt that this belonged to any of them.

Ernestine Anderson, an American jazz and blues singer, died last March at the age of 86.  In her six decades as a singer she recorded more than 30 albums and was nominated four times for a Grammy Award.  She performed at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, the Monterey Jazz Festival, and at other jazz festivals throughout the world.

She was one of 75 women featured in the book, I Dream a World: Portraits of Black Women Who Changed America (1999), by Pulitzer Prize winning photographer Brian Lanker.

The flip side of the Thank You, Mr. Moon record, which was released in 1965, was the song (A Prayer) Taps for the Brave.  An online search revealed no YouTube video of Anderson’s recording of either song and no other music streaming service where one can hear her sing either song.

But here’s a sample of the singing of this amazing jazz vocalist…

    1. Actually, I didn’t. I left it there because it was technically on the neighbor’s property.
