I’ve been away and have missed blogging and reading the posts of the bloggers I follow. It’s been over 3 weeks since my last post when I asked for prayers and good thoughts because my husband had just suffered a major stroke.
He is back home now after being hospitalized and treated by neurologists, gastroenterologists, cardiologists and urologists and after spending several days in the inpatient rehabilitation unit of the hospital where he received speech therapy, physical therapy, and occupational therapy. We are now facing a major change in our lives.
Although he has regained strength on his right side and is walking well with the assistance of a walker, he has lost half of the vision in each eye and still has some difficulty searching for words. He probably will never drive again and (whether because of the stroke’s effects on his brain or the vision problems, I don’t know) has lost the ability to read and write. Because of the risk of falling, he cannot be left alone. I have taken a leave of absence from my job and may not be able to return to work at all.
Next week he begins outpatient rehabilitation therapy. In the coming weeks he faces 2 procedures and an operation on his esophagus and possibly 2 procedures on his heart, which is pumping at only 25-30% capacity. Each procedure carries its own risks. For some procedures he must be on blood thinners. For others he must be off blood thinners for a period of time.
Both daughters and our 3 grandchildren have been here, gone home, returned again, and gone home again during this ordeal. It has been a blessing to have them here.
So that’s where I’ve been. I hope to maintain my return to blogging. I have received many sweet messages of support from my blogging community, and I would ask each of you to keep us in your thoughts and prayers.

Thank you so much! Lives can change in a moment, can’t they? Without my faith in the Lord I would be a basket case. I know God will see us through!

Of course we wish you both and your family only the best, and will keep you in our thoughts and prayers. Your family has pulled together with such strength in trying times before, and you will overcome this too.

It sounds grim. With guts, determination, expert help and support, he should make further progress, especially over the first few months. I wish you both all the best. Courage, as the French would say.

Thank you! He is improving daily from the effects of the stroke. I even noticed a slight improvement in his vision today. It’s the esophagus and heart problems that have me most concerned, but he’s in good spirits considering everything he’s going through. Thank you for your comments!

I was in a life threatening car accident in 2010. I almost died. Fractured pelvis in 9 places, ribs 8 broken, lung collapsed, grade v tear. I went to physical therapy for 3 years. I KNOW THINGS WILL GET BETTER. Never give up!
