The tulip poplar is one of the largest of the native trees in the eastern United States and is a valuable hardwood tree. Early European settlers in the U.S. called it “Canoewood” because Native Americans made dug-out canoes from its trunk. It also is known as Fiddletree, Whitewood, Yellow poplar, and as Tulip-tree because its flowers resemble tulips.
We have a large tulip poplar behind our house, and there are several in the surrounding woods. They are in bloom now, and fallen blooms can be seen scattered on our road.
