These are actually seed pods from the sweetgum tree.  Grandson Ben and our little next-door neighbor girl gathered these from our perennial garden last month.  Sweetgum trees don’t produce these seed pods until they are at least 20 years old, but once they begin producing, they drop hundreds of them.
