Unlikely New Growth

Two or three years ago a dead tree fell into one of our crape myrtle trees and split the trunk in two.  We assumed the crape myrtle would not make it, but last year new branches sprouted from the top.  Yesterday I noticed new growth coming from the actual split in the trunk.
