“There’s a lost horizon waiting to be found…”
I’ve loved this song ever since it was released in 1973. It is the theme song of the 1973 musical film of the same name, a film that was included in the book The Fifty Worst Films of All Time and was declared to be one of “The 100 Most Enjoyably Bad Movies Ever Made.” The movie was a musical remake of the 1937 movie version of the James Hilton novel Lost Horizon.
The theme song, and indeed all of the music, was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Sung by Shawn Phillips and released as a single which was played on radio stations here in the U.S., Lost Horizon has a haunting melody and a beautifully poignant message.
Have you ever dreamed of a place
Far away from it all
Where the air you breathe is soft and clean
And children play in fields of green
And the sound of guns
Doesn’t pound in your ears (anymore)Have you ever dreamed of a place
Far away from it all
Where the winter winds will never blow
And living things have room to grow
And the sound of guns
Doesn’t pound in your ears anymoreMany miles from yesterday before you reach tomorrow
Where the time is always just today
There’s a lost horizon waiting to be found
There’s a lost horizon
Where the sound of guns
Doesn’t pound in your earsAnymore
