An internationally known writer of fiction, Alexander McCall Smith is an English author who was born in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). His works include children’s novels, short stories and anthologies, but he is perhaps best known as the creator of The Ladies No. 1 Detective Agency series. McCall Smith also is the creator of the 44 Scotland Street series, the The Sunday Philosophy Club series, and the Corduroy Mansions series.
McCall Smith studied law at the University of Edinburgh and first began writing fiction while teaching at Queen’s University in Belfast. He later returned to Africa where he helped co-found the law school and taught law at the University of Botswana. Since 1984, he has lived in Edinburgh where he was Professor of Medical Law at the University of Edinburgh and now is Professor Emeritus.
I absolutely love his No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series and own all 18 books in the series. Number 19 will be available next week, and I have pre-ordered it. McCall Smith’s books are lovely, full of kindness and hope, the kind of books that keep me wanting more of his magnificent stories.
