Two steps forward, one step back. That’s how I feel about all of the work being done at our house.

The workmen did a wonderful job raising our back room that was sinking/collapsing. They poured concrete footings, raised and leveled the room, and installed drop girders and 12 support posts. Previously, the room had only three posts along the outer edge and stacks of concrete blocks holding it up. Unbelievable that it was built that way!
But once the room was raised and leveled, the door leading out of it onto the deck would no longer open. We couldn’t even get the dead bolt unlocked. One of the men finally got the door open by taking it off the hinges only to find that the hinges were rusted and the wood of the door was splitting. To get the door to close again, he had to hammer it closed! And there’s a gap at the top that I had to fill with old towels to keep out the cold air.
So now we need a new door. And to top it off, the door frame is not the standard size for an exterior door. The door we have now was shaved down to fit the door frame.
If it’s not one thing, it’s another!

so sorry!

That closing quote of yours is exactly the encouragement I wanted to give to you, Deb. If I can get my hands on the people who originally built your home so haphazardly I will wring their necks for sure!

My 91-year-old father said almost exactly the same thing! Thank you, Dries!

Sometimes renovations are harder to do than building a new one.

Oh my goodness, that was quite a job and now a new door too! I expect it will all be brilliant once finished – I truly hope so. 🙂

I hope so as well. Thank you. We’re having a little trouble replacing the door as the door frame is smaller than most exterior doors, but I’m sure it will all work out.
