Pileated Woodpeckers

Pileated woodpeckers sound like jungle birds…

And they were used by cartoonist Walter Lantz as models for the cartoon character Woody Woodpecker …

Nice photos, Deb! Their colouration must blend perfectly with the darkness deep in the woods?

    1. Thank you! Yes, their colouration does blend in. They’re often quite hard to see, although they are some of the largest birds in the woods. We hear them much more often than we see them.

  2. There is something so captivating about those birds. I always feel lucky when I see one or two. Four? That would be really special.

    1. Yes, it was special. They were there only the one morning, and I haven’t seen any since then.
