This post today is to ask for prayers for my grandson Ben who tested positive today for Covid. If you are a praying person, please offer up a prayer for Ben. Otherwise, please send some healing thoughts his way.
My long-time readers are familiar with Ben. When he was 3 years old he was diagnosed with an arteriovenous fistula (a vascular abnormality) in his brain. Shortly after his 4th birthday he and his parents flew to New York where he had life-saving surgery. World-renowned surgeon Dr. Alexandro Berenstein performed two operations, one in which platinum coils were placed in Ben’s brain and the other in which medical-grade “super glue” was injected into the affected area to totally stop the abnormal blood flow and close off the fistula. A year later Ben’s life was again in danger, and another surgery was performed, resulting in the Dr. B’s declaration that “Brave Ben” was cured. (If you have not followed Ben’s story and would like to read more, see my blog Believing for Ben and look in the Archives for posts from April and May, 2014.)
Now 10 years old, Ben has grown into a healthy, loving, spiritual, athletic young man. Even though the fistula in his brain affected the muscle development in one leg, Ben plays soccer, basketball and baseball. And he loves to go fishing. He enjoys school and does well in all of his academic subjects.
But now he has Covid. He has symptoms consistent with a sinus infection and conjunctivitis (pink eye), but no fever and no cough. We don’t know how Covid will affect him as it progresses, and we have no idea where he contracted the virus. He has been in school every day, but the schools in his area have had remarkably few cases. Ben does wear a mask to school, but masks are not required, and some of the other students don’t wear them.
Over the years my blogging community has been a comfort and support through Ben’s health issues. I would appreciate that support again as Ben faces Covid. Thank you for your healing thoughts and prayers.

Thank you so much, Sonda! Yes, God does have big plans for Ben. I do believe that. I talked to my daughter this afternoon, and she said Ben’s symptoms are like those of a sinus infection. He still has NO fever and NO cough, and he spent the day doing schoolwork at home. We are praying that he will continue to feel good and will be able to return to school in a couple of weeks.

That’s how most of the Covid19 cases have begun in the Nacoochee-Helen, GA area. I started with an eye infection just before Christmas 2019 then went into encephalitis. My brain felt like it had been split like an axe. Almost all other veterans of Covid here have the same story. It may be another strain that hit NE Georgia early and hung around. We really don’t have many intellectually curious healthcare professionals in the Ninth District. They just want their money. I had trouble with my memory for about two months afterward. Be prepared for that to affect him, even if his other symptoms are mild.

Thanks for the heads up. Ben’s dad had Covid last February, before anyone acknowledged that it was in Georgia (they live in Whitfield County), so Ben was exposed back then. His dad later tested positive for the antibodies after that testing became available. I’m just wondering how Ben could have been exposed almost a year ago, avoided getting sick, and now has Covid even though he hasn’t been around anyone with symptoms. We are thinking he was exposed again recently to someone, maybe at school or basketball, who was asymptomatic. Maybe even a different strain of the virus.

Praying for Ben to get well soon. How did he acquire the virus?

Thank you for your prayers. We don’t know how Ben acquired the virus, but we suspect it may have been at school. He lives in a rural area, and the schools are open and have had very few cases of the virus, but not all of the students wear masks.
