This blog originally was an outcome of trying to find more balance in a life that was largely devoted to work for the last 40 years. I retired in 2017 to care for my husband who suffered a major stroke in February of that year. He passed away in September, 2020. Prior to retiring I had two jobs: teaching Social Studies at a high school that has classes in the late afternoons and evenings for students in rural Appalachia and teaching U.S. History at a nearby university. Previously I taught Social Studies for 15 years in a girls boarding school located on the university campus. In my previous life (before teaching) I spent a few years as a newspaper reporter and several more as a civil rights investigator. I love my family, books, world music, Appalachian culture and folklore, Native American history and culture, genealogy, photography, the natural world, and now blogging… My blog posts may be about almost anything, hence my “Eclectic Musings.”
I am learning that “If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.”
All the best to you! Thanks so much for stopping by my blog 🙂

Thank you so much! I just put this header image up a couple of hours ago. I took this photo last year of a sweetgum leaf that was on our fence. Surprisingly, this year the sweetgum leaves have turned more of a yellow color.

Hmm, I’m unfamiliar with sweetgum–but how interesting that the leaf color is different this year. I’m so glad you got the red one “snapped”, as it looks so striking on the gray wood. God bless you BIG!

Hello neighbor! We live near each other, I think … I’m in Sautee Nacoochee, too. And, I’m working on a story about the ACA (Obamacare), and really loved your post about your experience with BCBS. Is there any chance that we can chat on the phone for a few minutes? I’m trying to finish up my story (for Georgia Trend magazine, whom I write for) about the ACA and would love to share your experience. The only thing is, my deadline is this weekend! Anyway, maybe we know each other already (small valley!). I’m Jerry Grillo, live just off Duncan Bridge Road, and my email address is fourcrickets@windstream.net … if you can spare a few minutes for a phone interview, drop me a line, and I’ll email my phone number to you, or whatever … either way, great blog!

Hello. I’m sorry I didn’t respond sooner. I am in hospital and have been here about 3 days but am on the mend now. I’m sorry to say I don’t know your brother. I teach at Brenau University on Gainesville, about 50 miles north of Atlanta. That would have been neat, though. Enjoy your trip!

I may have posted this twice…but here it goes. I grew up in Habersham Co. and entering year 30 in teaching (26 at North Hall). I was also adjunct probably at where you were …Brenau. used hind catcher all my life…How bout calling a washer a “washing machine”? Ever heard that?

I’m in White County now but grew up in Gainesville and, yes, I was at Brenau. I worked at The Times after college and then moved to Indiana for grad. school and stayed there 20 years. After coming back to Georgia I taught 15 years at Brenau Academy and then taught adjunct at the university. A couple of my Brenau Academy colleagues made the move over to North Hall. You may have known them: Dr. Gary Kerley and also Jan Ewing… I always call the washer a washing machine, and I cook on the “eyes” of the stove, not on the burners. LOL
