Late Bloomer

The blue hydrangea flowers are fading into muted purples at the arrival of autumn. But today I saw fresh blooms.   And maybe there will be even more. In the garden of life, late bloomers are especially beautiful  (Susan Gale)

Don’t eat bananas when the chrysanthemums are in bloom !

Over 30 years ago my allergy specialist advised me not to eat bananas when the chrysanthemums are in bloom.  Apparently they are in the same plant family, and my slight allergy to chrysanthemums could be multiplied several times over if I ate bananas while the chrysanthemum flowers are in bloom.  Because I was not a…

Country Clematis

Our country clematis, started 20 years ago from a plant in my grandmother’s garden, is now in full bloom.  It’s one of my favorites; the fragrance is lovely; and the flowers provide a beautiful remembrance of my grandmother who passed away in 2001 at the age of 99.

Our once-so-beautiful mimosa tree is struggling to survive.  Planted 20 years ago behind our house, it now is being crowded out by other trees.  Mimosas usually do not grow very tall, but ours is quite tall and spindly, trying to reach the sunlight that is year-by-year being blocked by other vegetation. Its Whole Potential

The rose is a rose from the time it is a seed to the time it dies. Within it, at all times, it contains its whole potential. It seems to be constantly in the process of change: Yet at each state, at each moment, it is perfectly all right as it is.      Paulo Coelho

Hydrangea: The “Water Barrel” Flower

Our hydrangeas didn’t bloom last year, possibly because of a late frost.  This year, all of the hydrangeas are in beautiful bloom. The name hydrangea comes from the Greek hydor which means water and angos which means jar or vessel.  This roughly translates to “water barrel,” referring to the cup-shaped flowers and the plant’s need for plenty…
